Walmart+ Fuel Benefit Enhancements

A Walmart+ key benefit is saving 10¢ per gallon for members. Partnering with ExxonMobil we could expand our reach to 14,000 fuel stations. This would give us more locations in the northeastern and western parts of the country, which at the time lacked fuel station partners.

Challenge

Add ExxonMobil as a new partner and keep the experience simple and easy. We initially proposed having a unique W+ QRcode on each fuel pump, to match the current Walmart+ fueling experience. This wasn’t feasible as it would give special priority to our discount on every pump. We compromised on using the existing QRcodes for Exxon Mobil Rewards program.

ExxonMobil required that we include geo-location in addition to QRcode scanning to access their pumps. They also required that we include pump selection, as that’s not integrated into their existing pump QR codes.

Results

User testing our approach validated that customers clearly understand how to unlock fuel discounts at ExxonMobil fuel stations.

I created a framework that supports our new fuel partner and enables existing and future partners to unlock the benefit via geo-location when available.

Launching this partnership increased the reach of our fuel benefit by 500%.
